Essential Vocabulary for IELTS Line Graph

One thing you should at all times keep in your mind that, there are some variations between describing a Line Graph and describing a Bar Diagram/Pie Chart/Table. The most important one is that Line Graphs illustrate “Period of Time” but Bar Diagrams/Pie Charts/Tables generally show “Point of Time”. Because of this reason, there needs to be variation in the use of vocabulary in describing these two different types of diagram.

As you can see, there are 6 different parts of the particular line graph. All the line graphs in the world are a mixture of these 6 parts. In real test, you will get more than one of these parts. So, it is essential to learn the crucial vocabularies that are needed to describe the given data.

First, look at part 1, 2, 4 & 6

Part 1: Increase / Rise + slowly / gradually.
So, the combinations are:
Increase slowly / Increase gradually / Rise slowly / Rise gradually

Part 2: Increase / Rise + rapidly / sharply
So, the combinations are:
Increase rapidly / Increase sharply / Rise rapidly / Rise sharply

Part 4: Reduce / Decrease + rapidly / sharply
So, the combinations are:
Reduce rapidly / Reduce sharply / Decrease rapidly / Decrease sharply

Part 6: Reduce / Decrease + slowly / gradually
So, the combinations are:
Reduce slowly / Reduce gradually / Decrease slowly / Decrease gradually

You will see that the words that should be used in describing the different parts of a Line Graph are same. You just have to to change the combination. For example, if you use “Increase sharply” one time, then you should use any other three variations recommended above to illustrate other parts of the given Line Graph having similar trend of Part 1.

Now, let’s focus on part 3 & 5

Part 3: Apex / Peak point

Part 5: Remain constant / Stabilized

Another important issue should be kept in mind in using the recommended combination is that; you may need to change the Tense.
